Listen: An urban scholar, a printmaker, and a sculptor walk into a recording studio…

FURTHER by artist-maker Robbie Rowlands. Photo courtesy of RR.

How do an urban scholar, a printmaker, and a sculptor operate with the notion of the surface? Robbie Rowlands, Asma and I recently sat down in Robbie’s recording studio in Melbourne and had a (rather disorganised, but full of ideas) chat about surfaces!

It all started from Robbie’s most recent work, Further, which was on public show here in Melbourne, and which I saw a few weeks ago - though sadly this is the only photo I managed:

Robbie created a sort of surface assemblage from cutting and putting together concrete form plywood, turning objects of construction utility into an abstract surface formation.

Where did he find these and what was his working process? And what the hell are we talking about? Listen here to find out….
